In your new office your boss is one person who has more impact than anyone else
over you. He always establishes benchmarks for your success, interprets your
actions for other key players, and controls resources you need. Building a
productive working relationship with him or her while you establish your
mandate and negotiate for resources is a clear early priority.

Defining your goals
|
|
Clarify mutual expectations early. As soon as you start your work
begin managing expectations right away, otherwise you would be in great trouble
as your boss's expectations could be more as compared to your working
capabilities.
|
|
Secure commitments for the resources you need. In association
with establishing goals, begin to negotiate for the key resources-people,
funding, and knowledge-you need to succeed. Don't commit such goals you are not
able to fulfill.
|
|
Aim for early wins in areas important to the boss. Try to fulfill
those works which have more priorities over your boss work list. But do not
completely ignore other works that are equally important to the company as
well.
|
|
Aim for good grades from those whose opinions your boss respects. This
is an aspect of building supportive internal coalitions. Your boss may have
pre-existing relationships with other people in the organization who are now
your seniors. If so, their assessments of yours would be added advantage for
you for your secured position in the office.
