Boss is the pilot of an organization, and his say counts a lot,
even more than the entire management taken together. He bears the onus of
establishing benchmarks for your success, interprets your actions for other key
players, and controls resources you need.
Building a productive working relationship with him/her while
you establish your mandate and negotiate for resources is what you need to
focus upon.
Defining your goals Following goals need to be defined
clearly for smooth functioning:
-
Clarify mutual expectations early - As soon
as you start your work, begin managing expectations right away, otherwise you
would be in a fiasco, as your boss's expectations could be more as compared to
your working capabilities.
-
Secure commitments for the resources you need
- In association with establishing goals; begin to negotiate for the key
resource-people, funding and knowledge-you need to succeed. Don't commit such
goals, which are difficult to fulfill.
-
Aim for early wins in areas important to the boss
- Try to fulfill those tasks/goals, which have more priorities in your boss's
work list. However, do not completely ignore other works that are equally
important to the company as well.
-
Aim for good grades from those whose opinions your boss
respects - This is an aspect of building supportive internal
coalitions. Your boss may have pre-existing relationships with other people in
the organization who are now your seniors. If so, their assessments of yours
would be added advantage for you to secure an indelible position in the office.
These cues will make you settle in an entirely new office set up
and help you develop a cordial relationship among your peers.
